      The Details

Accountants throw around phrases like business consulting, outsourced accounting, and tax returns without actually explaining what they are and, more importantly, what’s included. Even a ‘simple’ tax prep engagement can vary drastically from accountant to accountant.

Below are the various services and engagements I offer, including the pieces that make up the most common packages.

      Business Consulting

      Structured Strategy Retainer

à la carte starting at $2,000 (for initial meetings) or $500/mo (for a retainer)
Pricing based on: gross revenue, states, partners, and general complexity

Accounting and tax is just where business finance begins. But, that’s where a lot of accountnts leave it. They handle the numbers, and leave you to figure out your business strategy, tie it to your number, and make fiancial decisions.

At Resting Business Face, Structured Strategy consulting includes: an initial strategy meeting (to create your goals, SWOT, Lean Business Plan, rough budget, and initial action items), an initial finance meeting (to do a Profit & Loss review, Accounts Receiveable review, profitability review, calculate emergency fund levels, and create a defined budget), and monthly/quarterly meetings to iterate on that.

      Includes:

      • Strategy meeting
      • Finance meeting
      • Action items, punch list, & recommendations
      • Revisit the same problem areas & track improvement
      • Call notes & whiteboards
      • Call recordings

      Unstructured
      Q&A Retainer

à la carte starting at $350 (for a single meeting) or $500/mo (for a retainer)
Pricing based on: gross revenue, states, partners, and general complexity

Unstructured Q&A consulting are regular agenda-less consult calls. They work best for agency owners and operations managers that have a handle on overall strategy and have strong internal accountability, but are stuck finding the answers to their financial questions.

At Resting Business Face, Unstructured Q&A consulting includes: monthly/quarterly meetings to answer questions & workshop roadblocks and recordings of those calls.

      Includes:

      • Regular meetings
      • Action items, punch list, & recommendations
      • Revisit the same problem areas & track improvement
      • Call notes & whiteboards
      • Call recordings

      Year-round

      Tax Support

No à la carte option. Must be a tax or full-service client.

Most accountants don’t specifically charge for support. They charge you for just the tax return (and maybe the monthly books). Then, y’all hang out in this weird ‘How many questions am I allowed to ask before I get a bill?’ limbo, which doesn’t exactly set you up for success.

At Resting Business Face, year-round tax support includes: email tax support, tax planning guidance, quarterly tax estimate reminders, annual tax planning call, tax letter protection, and a discount on ad-hoc paid calls.

      Includes:

      • Email support
      • Year-round tax planning guidance
      • Quarterly tax estimate reminders
      • Annual tax planning call
      • Tax letter protection
      • 25% off paid calls

      Invoicing Workshop

      Coming Soon
      • Comprehensive pre-call workbook
      • 120-min call
      • Call notes & recording
      • Whiteboard your invoicing from sales thru follow-up
      • Recommendations
      • Invoicing scorecard
Working with Michael has been amazing. Two parts Real Talk, one part Therapy, with just a drizzle of sass – exactly what I needed. Michael has brought so much clarity to my business planning, but most especially he’s helped me get out of my own way. I’ve avoided business coaching in the past because of vague promises and no clear deliverables. Michael is the exact opposite. You are getting exactly what you think: the Edna Mode of Business Consulting.

      Tax Returns

      Business Tax Return

à la carte starting at $2,000
Pricing based on: gross revenue, states, partners, and general complexity

Business or corporate tax returns usually refer to the annual tax return for S-corps, partnerships, and C-corps. These legal entities require a separate tax return (in addition to your personal return). S-corps and partnerships are typically due by 3/15 and C-corps are typically due by 4/15.

At Resting Business Face, a business tax return includes: the business tax return itself (both the main form and any required states), prior-year tax return review (for new clients), secure portal access to transfer sensitive tax docs, accounting review & spot check*, shareholder basis tracking, and help with required year-end reimbursements (for health insurance).

*Fixing accounting prepared by someone other than myself is an extra fee. (Sorry, you can’t half-ass your books and have me fix it for free 😥)

      Includes:

      • Tax return
      • Prior-year tax return review
      • Secure portal access
      • Accounting review and spot check
      • Shareholder basis tracking
      • Required year-end reimbursements

      Personal Tax Return

à la carte starting at $500
Pricing based on: necessary tax credits, investments, gross revenue, states, and general complexity
Simple returns for full-service clients may be discounted.

Personal tax returns refer to your standard personal tax return that’s due by 4/15. Sole proprietorships and certain single-member LLCs are reported on a sub-schedule of your personal tax return and not on their own separate tax return.

At Resting Business Face, a personal tax return includes: the personal tax return itself (both the main form, any supporting schedules, and any required states), prior-year tax return review (for new clients), secure portal access to transfer sensitive tax docs, and accounting review & spot check* (for sole proprietors, SMLLCs, and rentals).

*Fixing accounting prepared by someone other than myself is an extra fee.

      Includes:

      • Tax return
      • Prior-year tax return review
      • Secure portal access
      • Accounting review and spot check
      • Shareholder basis tracking
      • Required year-end reimbursements
I originally booked a consultation with Michael because I had some tax specific questions in regards to how I should set up a new business entity for my husband’s company. What I came away with was SO much more than just a simple “you should do an LLC”. Michael offered valuable advice based on his experience but then also gave me some things to look for in regards to the local attorney that I’d be using to set everything up. A lot of times these kinds of conversations can feel overwhelming or stressful, and Michael offers such clear and actionable advice, wrapped in a fun and easy to chat with package, I wouldn’t trust anyone else as a business advisor going forward!

      Outsourced Accounting

      Monthly or Quarterly Accounting

No à la carte option. Must be a tax or full-service client.

Outsourced accounting refers to hiring an accountant or bookkeeper to take over your bookkeeping; maintain your accounting software, general ledger, and chart of accounts; and prepare basic financial reports.. The most common software for small business accounting is Quickbooks Online, but I prefer Xero.

At Resting Business Face, outsourced accounting includes: regular & timely financials to run your business, capturing and categorizing every deduction, modern accounting software, spotless Profit & Loss (and Balance Sheet or Cash Flow Forecast, if required), tax return & audit ready books, and specialized bots and algos to ensure accuracy.

      Includes:

      • Regular & timely financials to run your business
      • Capture, categorize, & reconcile every deduction
      • Modern cloud accounting software
      • Spotless Profit & Loss (and Balance Sheet, if required)
      • Tax return & audit ready
      • Specialized bots and algos to ensure accuracy

      Annual Write-up

No à la carte option. Must be a tax or full-sevice client.

Annual write-ups are similar to outsourced accounting. Your bank and credit card transactions are captured and categorized, then turned into tax return and audit ready books. The main differences are that annual write-ups happen annually and use a different method to create your tax return ready books (ie, we’ll skip the traditional bank feeds and manually import sanitized CSVs).

At Resting Business Face, annual write-ups include: once-a-year accounting catch-up, capturing and categorizing every deduction, modern accounting software, spotless Profit & Loss, tax return & audit ready books, and specialized bots and algos to ensure accuracy.

      Includes:

      • Once-a-year accounting catch-up
      • Capture, categorize, & reconcile every deduction
      • Modern cloud accounting software
      • Spotless Profit & Loss (and Balance Sheet, if required)
      • Tax return & audit ready
      • Specialized bots and algos to ensure accuracy

      Payroll Set-up

      Starting at $350
      • Gusto set up
      • Employee self-onboarding
      • Historic payroll import
      • Personalized ‘How to run payroll’ walkthrough video
      • Help with any initial hiccups
So happy to have found Michael! He made navigating and filing taxes incredibly stress-free, even with tricky variables. He’s always extremely patient, kind, and responsive. His electronic system for gathering and providing info makes the process quick and easy. He’s thorough in answering questions and explains in a way that’s easy to understand. Highly recommend Michael’s services. Looking forward to working with Michael for many years to come.

      🤔 General FAQ 🤔

My business is a mess. Do I need to fix it and clean up some loose ends before hiring you?

No. In fact, most of my clients needed help getting up to snuff when they hired me. We’ll get your accounting caught up, back taxes filed, and create an ongoing plan for the future of your business.

Bring that mess with you. Let’s fix it together.

      Is this tax-deductible?

      Of course 😉

Will you keep me out of tax jail?

      That’s the plan.

What software and tools will we use?

We’ll use a combination of the following tools:

      • A secure portal to transfer sensitive documents (including tax documents and returns)
      • Password-protected Zoom for meetings
      • Xero & Hubdoc for accounting (when you’re outsourcing it to me)
      • Gusto for payroll
      • Drake Software for tax preparation (You’ve probably never heard of them, but Drake Software is one of the oldest professional tax prep software companies.)
      • Email for all other communications

      What’s the minimum commitment?

      Full-service monthly/quarterly packages are a 12-month commitment.

à la carte tax returns (both personal and business) are just that season’s tax return.

      Can I expect confidentiality?

Yes. I do not share my client names, client list, or any details regarding my clients with anyone. The only way someone will know we’re working together is if you mentioned it to them or you’ve left a testimonial.

      * I may draw inspiration from our conversations for LinkedIn posts or newsletter emails, but will never specifically name you, use details that might connect it to you, or shame you.

What happens if I get audited?

If the audit was due to my mistake, I’ll write letters and defend it at no charge to you.

If the audit was due to your mistake or random happenstance, I can help you for an additional fee. (Unless you’re on a tear-round tax support plan, which includes letter protection.)

How long do clients stay with you?

Typically, clients stay until they close/sell their business, outgrow my services (for example, when they need an internal accounting team), or their business evolves into an industry I can’t help with.

And, in my experience, the crass joke that someone will divorce their spouse before they leave their accountant is very true.

      What factors affect your pricing?

Consulting prices depend on how frequently we meet, how complex your business is, and how much support you’d like between meetings.

Business tax return prices depend on your gross revenue, number of partners, states you’re located in (including states you have employees in), and general complexity.

Outsourced accounting depends on the number of transactions, how many checks you, complicated journal entries, and how frequently you’d like your books updated.

Personal tax returns depend itemized deductions, children, businesses, rental properties, investment sales, and general complexity.

I’m in [specific industry]. Can you help me?

It depends. I mainly work with small creative and marketing agencies and the majority of my business. A lot of that knowledge is still applicable to other service industries (eg, lawyers, coaches, consultants, etc). If you’re in another industry (like ecommerce, brick & mortar retail, construction, SaaS, etc), I might be able to help, but will probably suggest you find someone that specializes in your industry.

What kinda clients do you work with?

I typically work with small creative and marketing agencies (including freelancers and consultants) with up to 25 employees.

What’s the criteria for working with you?

Culture fit – Let’s call it what it is, I’m not your average dry business consultant or a pat you on the back business coach. I curse (never at you tho), crack jokes, am very serious about business, and will give some harsh tough love from time to time.

Have to answer YES to these three questions:

      • Do you give a shit about your business and want to do things the right way?
      • Do you want to do better?
      • Are you willing to feel the discomfort of putting in more effort and trying new things that will feel weird and different and won’t work right away?

Most importantly – I don’t commit or help clients commit fraud. Full stop. If you’re looking for an accountant to cut corners, look somewhere else.

      Will this fix my business?

Not in and of itself, no. All the advice, accountability, and accounting in the world can’t replace hard work (or working capital). You need to implement it and make the necessary changes in your business. That said, I’ll try my hardest to set you up for success with high-quality, actionable business advice and accurate tax advice.

      How do I pay?

I accept credit cards, debit cards, ACH debit/echeck, and traditional checks. Tax-only clients will pay thru the client portal. One-off Consulting clients will pay via Calendly (processed by Stripe). Recurring Consulting clients will pay via recurring ACH debit.

      Are you a CPA?

I’m not a CPA. I’m an EA (aka, an Enrolled Agent), which is a license overseen by the US Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service. As far as taxes goes, CPAs and EAs have similar rights.

(You didn’t ask, but my EA license is active and in good standing.)

What the IRS says about EAs:

An enrolled agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns, or through experience as a former IRS employee. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. Individuals who obtain this elite status must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years.

      Source: irs.gov

      Do I need a CPA?

Not necessarily. You might need a CPA if you need audited financials for a loan or investors. Otherwise, you just need an expert accountant that’ll make sure your work is done right.

      What’s your average turnaround time?

Tax returns (both business and personal) are usually prepared, reviewed, and ready to file within two weeks of when I receive everything.

Accounting usually two weeks from when I receive the bank statements until that month’s financials are ready. Annual accounting might take longer.

How quickly do you respond to emails?

I try to answer all my emails by the end of the day. But, I’ll usually get back to you within 24 hours (unless it’s a weekend).

Why a Chat instead of a Discovery Call?

I’m supposed to kick things off with a cleverly named discovery call (like, a clarity call, breakthrough session, strategy pow wow, etc) and get right into it. Just get hot and heavy with the big value questions.

      • How much revenue are you earning?
      • What are your goals?
      • If you could wave a magic wand and fix one problem, what would it be?
      • How much are you ready to invest in your success?
(I don’t actually ask that, by the way. It feels slimy. 😖)

You know the questions. We’ve all been on the wrong side of a high-octane discovery call.

But, in all my years as an advisor and accountant, no one has ever wanted to jump right into full-blown discovery. Everyone has a preliminary few questions they wanna ask.

So, instead of slapping you with discovery right out of the gate, we’ll take it easy — schedule a call, ask your questions, and, if you like my vibe, I’ll explain the next steps and discovery process.

(Note: This is an opportunity for you to ask about me, my practice, and how I can help you. And, while I might answer a few quick tax or finance questions because I can’t help myself, this isn’t a consulting call.)
